SynthX Sustainability

SynthX will position Rice to dramatically increase its funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which was allocated a budget of $45 billion in 2022. Additionally, other organizations such as the Department of Defense CDMRP ($1.56 billion), National Science Foundation Bio ($48 million), American Cancer Society ($146 million), Alzheimer's Association ($59 million), Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas ($292 million), and various federal and philanthropic organizations contribute to the funding of this field of research. Because of the substantial funding available for cancer research, strengthening Rice’s programs in this area will yield strong dividends. SynthX is committed to actively pursuing these funding opportunities, particularly center/training grants, multi-PI grants, and large foundation awards. Furthermore, we anticipate that the funds raised by SynthX will be sufficient to support its operations after the initial funding period and convert SynthX into an interdisciplinary Research Institute.
